An Illustrated Survey of Orchid Genera

by Tom Sheehan and Marion R. Sheehan

Tom and Marion Sheehan received the American Orchid Society's Gold Medal of Achievement in 1995, the year this book was published. It features Marion Sheehan's superb illustrations, in which orchids are presented in several views to depict the different characteristics by which the genera are separated. Painted from fresh plants, the illustrations are both beautiful and botanically exact. In all, 158 genera are illustrated. Each genus receives a complete description, with a list of the more popular species, noting flowering season, habitat, and locale.

With gorgeous illustrations and a minimum of technical jargon, the book provides orchid growers and enthusiasts both a comprehensive survey of the more commonly grown orchid genera and an overview of orchid taxonomy and classification. The book includes an updated species list and an extensive glossary.

"This book is based on the Sheehans' popular column 'Orchid Genera Illustrated' and is a valuable reference for every serious orchid grower and judge.... Marion Sheehan is, in my opinion, the best botanical artist in the United States." --Mary Noble McQuarry, author of You Can Grow Orchids series
